Undertale is a story-driven RPG created by Toby Fox that puts an unusual spin on traditional monster battles. After falling into the Underground, you encounter a strange collection of monsters and must decide how to deal with them. You can fight, show mercy, interact with enemies, and build relationships, with your decisions influencing the story and its eventual outcome.

The adventure takes you through a mysterious underground world filled with puzzles, unusual characters, hidden secrets, and memorable encounters. Combat is central to the journey, but defeating every opponent isn't necessarily the best solution. During encounters, you can choose FIGHT, use ACT to interact with an enemy, use items, or select MERCY when an opponent can be spared. This unusual system makes conversations and enemy behavior just as important as traditional RPG statistics.

Battles in Undertale are built around a distinctive bullet-dodging system. When an enemy attacks, your SOUL appears inside a battle box, and you must move it around incoming hazards while avoiding damage.

• Read enemy dialogue and behavior to discover useful ACT options.
• Experiment with different interactions rather than immediately attacking.
• Use MERCY when you've discovered how to resolve an encounter peacefully.
• Watch attack patterns carefully and move your SOUL through safe spaces.
• Remember that your decisions can influence later events and relationships.

Three Major Paths, Three Very Different Experiences

The game has three primary routes: Neutral, True Pacifist, and Genocide, with different requirements and outcomes for each.

• Neutral Route: Your choices fall between the requirements of the other two routes, producing different variations depending on whom you fight, spare, or befriend.
• True Pacifist Route: Avoid killing monsters, befriend key characters, and complete the required events to reach the game's peaceful conclusion.
• Genocide Route: Deliberately eliminate every required monster in each area, causing major changes to encounters, characters, music, and the world itself.

Build Relationships Through Unexpected Encounters

Undertale's characters are more than obstacles standing between you and the next area. Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Alphys, Toriel, and many other inhabitants have their own personalities, motivations, and reactions to your actions.

Getting to know these characters can unlock additional interactions and influence which story route becomes available. Befriending Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys is particularly important when pursuing the True Pacifist path.

Explore, Solve Puzzles, and Manage Your Resources

Between battles, you'll travel through different areas of the Underground and encounter puzzles, environmental obstacles, shops, NPCs, and hidden interactions.

• Visit shops when you need useful equipment or healing items.
• Manage your inventory before challenging difficult encounters.
• Pay attention to seemingly insignificant details because Undertale often rewards curiosity.
